How to Tell the Authenticity of Diamonds

This guide is helpful for people who own jewelry collections or pieces and want to know if they are genuine. Clients may often come around to sell diamond rings (ขาย แหวน เพชร, which is the term in Thai) to you the easiest and most effective method to test a stone to see whether or not it is a diamond is to use a relatively cheap diamond tester.

Here are a few other ways to tell if a diamond is real or fake:

Water Test

Use this straightforward test to ensure a diamond is real.

Get an average sized drinking glass and fill it ¾ of the way with water. Gently drop the loose stone into the glass.

If it sinks, it is a real diamond. If it floats underneath or at the surface of the water, you know it is a fake.

A genuine diamond has high density, so the water test demonstrates if your stone matches this level of density.

 Fog Test

For this test, hold the ring or diamond between two fingers and breath on it with a puff of air. A light fog will rest on the diamond because of the moisture and heat in your breath.

If the fog disperses right away, the diamond is real. If it takes several seconds for the fog to dissipate, it is likely a fake diamond.

Diamonds effectively conduct heat and therefore dissipate heat quickly.

Heat the Stone and See if it Shatters

Diamonds are made of astonishingly durable material and will be unresponsive to high heat.

For this test, fill a drinking glass with cold water. Use a set of fireproof gloves or pliers to hold the stone. Heat the stone with a lighter for about 40 seconds, and then drop the stone directly into the cold water.

If the stone shatters, you can be sure that it is made of weaker components and is not a real diamond. A real diamond will show no reaction.
