Jewelry has always been an integral part of human culture since centuries. Although, every era has shaped the way it looks and there has also been infinite stories and myths around jewelry.   • Gold is available in a plethora of colors

 

Gold has always been yellow in the first place. But as there are white, gold, rose gold variants available, many believe that gold is derived in a number of colors. You need to understand that they are just alloys of gold which are made by mixing pure gold with other metals such as silver, iron or platinum. For example, white gold is a combination of nickel, gold and palladium and rose gold is a combination of gold, silver, and copper.

 

  • The 12 gemstones have been originated from 12 tribes of Israel

 

Where the myth comes from is based on a true event. It was King Solomon who built the first Jewish Temple and the High Priest wore a breastplate which had 12 gemstones in it. Those gemstones represented the 12 tribes of Jerusalem. From this moment, the gist evolved to be birthstones for every month of the year. These stones were matched to every month for no reason whatsoever. This occurred in the early 20th century that those modern birthstones began taking shape. 

 

  • Sapphires are always blue

 

Although, sapphires may be associated with cerulean shade, but these stones are available in more colors apart from blue. On the basis of the number of impurities been present in the stone, the color may change from blue to a lighter blue or sometimes a different color entirely. For example, the standard blue sapphire has traces of iron and titanium. The existence of vanadium transforms sapphires to purple and iron turns them yellow.

 

  • Diamonds cannot be destroyed

 

This is one of the biggest jewelry myth ever. As a matter of fact, diamonds are the most durable gemstones scoring 10 on the Moh’s scale of hardness. But a level 10 classification means that they cannot be scratched. And while diamonds are most durable due to its rigid composition, they can easily be cracked under extremely high heat and pressure. Hence, always look after your diamonds.
